Sixteen students in G-3 have volunteered to participate in the Radford Speech Festival in February. Once parents agree, each student will receive their script to study. Students are excited about this worthwhile event. Rationale: America's Number One Fear is not death, but speaking in front of a group. My goal is to help my students confront this fear at an early age. In addition, Ss will learn poise, voice projection, clear diction, "acting skills," and the ability to analyze characters (a Lang. Arts Common Core Standard for Reading). Although this represents additional work and student responsibility, its value far outweighs the time and energy required. For the past twenty years (or more) Ss from G-3 have "bit the bullet" and accepted this challenge. Because of their outstanding performances, this activity becomes a priceless and precious memory for them.
